How to Build Confidence in Your Child

The Link Between Confidence and Self-Esteem
Confidence can be defined as "a feeling of self-assurance arising from one's appreciation of one's own abilities or qualities. It is no secret that confidence is a vital component of self-esteem.Self-esteem impacts everything we do in our lives. Those who have a strong sense of self-esteem enjoy more success in school, relationships, career, and life. For many kids, their confidence is under attack from multiple sources. Take for ....

  • The Rise of the Bully

Bullying has been around for a long time and has been the subject of countless, books, movies, research, and debate. While I was young, there was some fairly simple advice offered as to how to deal with a bully. In this day and age, the bullying phenomenon has become much more complicated. With the rise of social media and the fact that many parents allow their children to have unsupervised access to the internet, it seems that dealing with bullying has gone from a playground rite of passage to a full-blown epidemic. What further complicates the issue is that the “old school” method of dealing with bullies is not only frowned upon but carries serious consequences. I, like many ....

  • Get your Kids to Listen Part 4

Tip #4 Just Listen If you want your kid to develop a certain behavior, it is criticalthat you demonstrate it yourself. This concept is the foundation of my book Samurai Parenting Secrets. As parents, we all are very busy, but we have to take the time to listen to our kids. Of course, when Johnny wants to tell us something importantthat happened we are usually all ears. However, how often are you looking at your phone or tv when your child is talking to you? Half listening and mumbling back responses leaves your child feeling that they are less important or that it is ok to not give another full attention. As I was writing this post my son wanted to tell me about the episode of ....

  • Get your Kids to Listen Part 3

Tip #3 Assuming Kids Can Empathize At our martial arts school, we actively teach the concept of empathy to our students. The reason we do this is because empathy is a learned behavior that develops over time. Lambasting Johnny about his messy room and guilting him into cleaning up is not an effectivestrategy. "I work all day, and I come home to your room being messy? Don't you care at all?" Statements such as this will make Johnny feel guilty and will also put you in a negative mindset. These feelings could lead to resentment on both sides. Do not assume that your young child knows what it is like to be at work all day or to juggle multiple responsibilities. At the end of the ....

  • Get your Kids to Listen Part 2

Tip #2 Stop Nagging I have never met an adult who likes to be constantly reminded of what is wrong, what can be done better, what shouldbe done, etc. Kids do not like it either. "Johnny, why is your room not clean?", "You always leave a mess", "I am tired of your messes around the house", "We are going to be late, because you are not cleaning your room and we are not leaving until it is clean." There are many problems with this type of communication and it can result in kids who lack confidence. The underlying tone to many of these nags is that there is something wrong with Johnny. More likely, there is a problem with this parents communication skills. Similar to the tip ....

  • Get your Kids to Listen Part 1

For years parents have told me that they want their child to listen and follow directions. Karate training does help a lot of kids develop better focus and attentiveness, however, as parents, we can alsodevelop better communication skills. This article is the first in a multi-partseries designed to help parents communicate with their kids more effectively. Tip #1 SHUT UP! If you know me, you also know that I do not like the term "shut up." I use it here to get your attention and to help prove the point I am about to make. Often times parents over talk their points to their kids. I am not suggesting that you are rude to your family, I am advocating that when correcting behavior the ....
